Important: Registration

Please complete your registration. When you launch Acrobat the first time you are prompted to register your copy online. You may also select Registration from the Help menu to register your copy online. Alternatively, you can register your copy by filling in and mailing the registration card provided with Adobe Acrobat. You must register to receive technical support.

Serial Numbers

You will find the serial number on the outside of the Acrobat CD jewel box. Enter this number when prompted by the application. Do not use the number on the bottom of the Adobe Acrobat box or the serial number displayed in the About Acrobat box. If your serial number does not work, please contact Adobe Customer Support.

System Requirements

Acrobat Standard System Requirements

These are the minimum system resources Acrobat Standard requires:
- Pentium®-class processor
- Microsoft® Windows® 98 Second Edition, Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with Service Pack 6, Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2, Windows XP Professional or Home, or Windows XP Tablet PC
- 64 MB of RAM (128 MB recommended)
- 220 MB of available hard-disk space for a Typical installation
- CD-ROM drive if installing from a CD
- Internet Explorer 5.01 or greater is required.

The installer creates temporary files during installation so the actual hard disk space required during installation is greater than the values listed above.

Acrobat Professional System Requirements

These are the minimum system resources Acrobat Professional requires:
- Pentium®-class processor
- Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with Service Pack 6, Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2, Windows XP Professional or Home, or Windows XP Tablet PC
- 64 MB of RAM (128 MB recommended)
- 245 MB of available hard-disk space for a Typical installation
- CD-ROM drive if installing from a CD
- Internet Explorer 5.01 or greater is required

The installer creates temporary files during installation so the actual hard disk space required during installation is greater than the values listed above.

Web Browser Support

The web browsers within which PDF files may be viewed are:
Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5, 6.0, or 6.1
Netscape Navigator 7.0
America On Line 6.0, 7.0, or 8.0

Installation Instructions

Installing and Uninstalling Acrobat for Windows

To install Acrobat, follow these steps:

- Make sure you have at least 245 MB of available disk space for a Typical installation of Acrobat Professional or 220 MB of available disk space for a Typical installation of Acrobat Standard.
- Make sure you have Internet Explorer 5.01 or greater on your system before installing since Acrobat requires this software.
- Turn off all anti-virus software before beginning the installation.
- Install Acrobat.

To uninstall Acrobat, follow these steps:
- From Start select Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs
- Select Adobe Acrobat 6 and press the Add/Remove... button

Note: Uninstalling Adobe Acrobat 6 does not uninstall other versions of Acrobat but does remove Distiller Printer as well as the Adobe PDF printer. Uninstalling Adobe Acrobat 6 also removes Registry settings that are used in common with earlier Acrobat releases affecting the viewing of PDF files in the browser.

PostScript® Driver

Installing Acrobat upgrades your PostScript driver; the specific driver and version installed depends upon your computer's operating system:
-AdobePS 4.5.3 for Windows 98 SE
-AdobePS 5.2.2 for Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Service Pack 6
-Pscript 5.2 Windows Update for Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 and Windows XP.

Installation Issues

Make sure you have turned off all anti-virus software before beginning the installation. Device drivers may also conflict with Acrobat's installer. Starting Windows 2000, XP, or 98 SE causes Windows to load only essential standard device drivers. Starting Windows NT in VGA Mode loads all standard drivers except the video driver, so additional steps will need to be taken in Windows NT to ensure that background running applications and utilities are shut down and will not interfere with the installation. Contract Microsoft for assistance if you are unsure how to do that. Note: If you boot your system in Safe Mode, your CD-ROM will be disabled. Copy the Acrobat folder to your hard disk drive first. Then, install Acrobat from your hard disk. You will need approximately 245 MB of free disk space to copy the Acrobat folder to your hard disk for Acrobat Professional and 220 MB of free disk space to copy the Acrobat folder to your hard disk for Acrobat Standard.

You must have administrative privileges to install Acrobat on Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT.

The Acrobat installer uses MSI technology which backs up any files that it might potentially overwrite. If installing over an old version, the required hard disk space for running the Acrobat installer is approximately twice the size of the installer.

Install Acrobat after applications that produce PDF. - Be sure to install Acrobat after other applications that create PDF as such applications install older versions of files that Acrobat's PDF Creation functions require. Acrobat Standard and Professional installs special support for PDF creation for these applications: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Acrobat Professional additionally installs special support for PDF creation for these applications: Microsoft Visio, Autodesk AutoCAD, and Microsoft Project. If you do install these applications after installing Acrobat you can use Acrobat's repair feature to add Adobe PDF creation support. Select Detect and Repair from the Acrobat 6 Help menu to do this.

Adobe PDF Printer - Should you see an error message that the Adobe PDF Printer could not be created, please see the Adobe Support Knowledgebase article at:
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/3099e.htm

Shell32.dll version 4.72.3110.0 is required by Acrobat self-healing on Windows NT 4 SP 6. When Acrobat launches it checks the files installed, and if it finds a problem, initiates self-healing. For Windows NT 4.0 SP 6 users, if you find self-healing is not successful, check that the version of Shell32.dll is 4.72.3110.0 or higher. Alternatively, you can launch Acrobat and repair your installation. See the paragraph below for how to do this.

For Windows 98 SE systems if you see a message stating that your system needs ADSI client extensions, contract Microsoft for assistance if you are unsure how to obtain and install the ADSI client extensions.

Repairing the installation - If you find an Acrobat function failing that used to work you can repair your installation. To do this, Select Detect and Repair from the Acrobat 6 Help menu. If you cannot launch Acrobat successfully you can also repair your installation from the Control Panel. From the Start menu select Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. From the dialog that comes up, select Acrobat 6 and then press the Change button to repair your installation.

Reporting System Information - You can find out your system information and what plug-ins you have installed on your system by selecting System Info from the Help menu. The Send Report feature works with your default email program to send a copy of the information in System Parameters and Installed Plug-Ins as an attached text file. You can also use copy (<Ctrl> <c>) and paste (<Ctrol> <v>) from the keyboard to copy and paste the text shown into any text-based application.

Troubleshooting Issues

Backward Compatibility

Using Acrobat to view and print files created in earlier versions of Acrobat
You can use Acrobat to view and print PDF files created with earlier versions of Acrobat taking note of the following:
-Some fonts may be substituted. Acrobat performs font substitution if the font requested is not available on the user's system. When such PDF files are printed, the printed document will appear differently if the font used within the PDF file is available within the printer. Similarly, when such PDF files are viewed on a different system, if the font used within the PDF file is available on that system, the PDF files will view differently as well. PDF files that use the Symbol font, for example, will substitute the Adobe Pi font if the Symbol font is not present on the system being used. You can determine if Acrobat is performing font substitution by selecting Document Properties > Fonts.

Adobe Forms

Using Acrobat with Adobe Forms
You must have Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 installed if you will be using Acrobat with forms created using the Adobe Forms product.

Configuring the Acrobat application for your environment

Single-key accelerators are off by default
By default accelerator keys are turned off in Acrobat. To turn them on, click the "Use single-key accelerators to access tools" checkbox on the General Preferences panel.

Viewing

Movie requires the Quicktime activeX component for Use Remote URL to work
QuickTime users must install the QuickTime activeX plug-in. If you want to view in Acrobat a file via the browser that requires the QuickTime plug-in and you don't have QuickTime's activeX component installed, the Acrobat Movie tool's "Use Remote URL" option will not work as expected. QuickTime will display a warning.

Viewing Photoshop Album 1.0 files in Acrobat requires DirectX on Windows NT
For Windows NT 4 SP 6 users, if you find you cannot view Photoshop Album 1.0 files on your system within Acrobat you may need to install DirectX version 8 or greater available from Microsoft at their website: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/default.asp.

Installing Asian Language Files for Adobe Acrobat
Asian Language Files are available for Adobe Acrobat. With any language version of Adobe Acrobat, you can display Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files that contain text in Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Japanese, and Korean (CJK). You need the additional Asian fonts installed in order to view the PDF file on non-native systems even if the author of a PDF file embeds CJK fonts in the document. All you need to do is install the appropriate Asian Language files for use with Adobe Reader. Asian Language Support installers are available on the Adobe Acrobat 6 product CD, or you can install them on demand (when a file that requires the fonts is opened) using the Updates feature.

Importing/Exporting Comments

Importing/Exporting Comments into Word Documents
While importing comments into Word 2002, sometimes the comments cannot be placed properly in the Word document. For such comments, in the comment bubble you will see "Placement Unconfirmed" in red text. These comments need to be placed manually.

PDF Creation

Using Create PDF From Multiple Files
Encapsulated PostScript or PostScript files must each be converted to PDF first before you can combine them into one PDF using Create PDF From Multiple Files.

Transparent text viewing using Microsoft Visio
Microsoft Visio files containing transparent text can be converted to PDF but when displayed may show the transparent text in the wrong location and using the wrong color. To avoid this, replace or remove the transparent text before creating the PDF file.

Documents containing text of large font size
On Windows NT, when you use Adobe PDF from an Office application to create a PDF on a document containing text of large font size, the text may not be recognized by Acrobat correctly. The resulting PDF is neither reflowable nor accessible. The particular font size beyond which this happens depends on the printer dpi settings and the font used. To avoid this problem, a work around is to reduce the font size.

Information for customers of Acrobat 6.0 and PageMaker/FrameMaker
Make sure that Acrobat 6.0 is installed before installing PageMaker and/or FrameMaker. Do not install the Acrobat Distiller that comes with PageMaker 7.0 and/or FrameMaker 7.0. Also, make sure that you have the latest revision of PageMaker 7 and/or FrameMaker 7 installed including any dot release before using Acrobat 6 with these products.

If you need to use an older version of Distiller to create your PDF (for compatibility reasons) from earlier versions of PageMaker and/or FrameMaker, then maintain at least one machine for that purpose.

The default path for saving a custom joboptions file in Acrobat 6 is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Adobe PDF 6.0\Settings. If you need this joboptions file to be available to FrameMaker or PageMaker copy it to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Distillr\Settings
which is where FrameMaker and Pagemaker expect to find Acrobat's settings files.

Attach as Adobe PDF feature not available in new mail message for Microsoft Outlook if invoked externally
If you right-click on a file on your desktop and select "Send To > Mail Recipient" or invoke a new mail message from the command line, the "Attach as Adobe PDF" feature will not be available. To avoid this problem, create a new mail message from within Microsoft Outlook and click on the "Attach as Adobe PDF button" to attach a PDF file to the new mail message.

Transparent GIF and PNG images may result in extremely large PDF files
Using GIF and PNG graphics in documents is common since they are often used on web pages. However, using GIF or PNG files which include transparency will cause PDF files generated from many applications to be much larger than expected. To reduce file sizes, use an image editing tool (such as Paint, Microsoft Photo Editor, or Adobe Photoshop) to change transparent GIF or PNG files to non-transparent versions before including them in Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Microsoft PowerPoint, and other files that will be converted into PDF format.

Converting Links During PDF Creation for Microsoft Office 2000/XP Documents
To successfully convert links in an Office document be sure to turn on the "Enable accessibility and reflow" option. To do this follow these steps:
-Select File > Create PDF > From File...
-On the dialog that appears, select "Microsoft Office" in the Files of Type field
-Press the Settings button
-On the dialog that appears, turn on the "Enable accessibility & reflow (Microsoft Office 2000/XP only)" and "Add bookmarks and links to Adobe PDF file" checkboxes.
-Press the OK button to confirm settings.

Preservation of screen settings and transitions for Microsoft Office PowerPoint
All PowerPoint transitions are preserved, but if an equivalent transition is not available in Acrobat it is mapped to the closest transition available in Acrobat. Animations are also preserved with a maximum of one per slide. PowerPoint transition effects are not preserved for shapes.

Printing

Using the Print As Image option may eliminate printing problems
If Acrobat fails to print a file correctly, try selecting the Print As Image option in Acrobat's Print > Advanced dialog. This option, which tells Acrobat to send a 300 dpi raster image to the printer rather than vector art, may enable troublesome files to print. This option is not, however, recommended for general purpose use because it may make many PDF files print slower.

For PostScript Printing use Simulate Overprinting if your PDF contains spot colors
For PostScript printing, if your PDF contains objects with spot colors, such objects will not appear on the printed output unless Simulate Overprinting is on. To turn on Simulate Overprinting, select Advanced on the Print dialog and on the Output pane select the Simulate Overprinting checkbox.

Shrink Large Pages
Shrink Large Pages shrinks large pages to fit the currently selected paper size, but does not enlarge small pages. Pages larger than the imageable area of the currently selected paper size are shrunk to the imageable area of the currently selected paper size.

Purchasing or Viewing eBooks

Activating Acrobat 6 for use with eBooks
Before you can purchase or view an eBook you must activate Acrobat 6 for use with eBooks. If you try to activate from the Adobe web site and have Acrobat 5 or Acrobat Reader 5 installed, Acrobat 5 or Acrobat Reader 5 will launch instead of Acrobat 6 and you may see an "unsupported file type" error message. To avoid this error, be sure to launch Acrobat 6 first.

Using eMail to Transfer PDF Files

Note: you may see these issues with other file formats as well as with PDF files.

Using eMail to Transfer a PDF file from a Windows computer system to a Mac OS X computer system
If you transfer a PDF file from a Windows computer system to a Mac OS X computer system using email, the PDF file attachment may become corrupted. A scenario where this may occur is when using Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 on a Windows computer system and either Eudora or Entourage on a Mac OS X computer system. To avoid this problem, configure Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 on the Windows computer system to use uuencoding. To do this follow these steps (instructions are for Outlook Express but the steps are similar for Outlook 2000):
-From the Tools menu select Options...
-Select the Send tab
-By Mail Sending Format select Plain Text
-By Mail Sending Format click on the Plain Text Settings... button
-Select the Uuencode radio button.
-Click OK a couple times to confirm the settings.

Using eMail to Transfer a PDF file from a Mac OS X computer system to a Windows computer system
If you transfer a PDF file from a Mac OS X computer system using email to a Windows computer system, two PDF files may be received. A scenario where this may occur is when using either Eudora or Entourage on a Mac OS X computer system and Outlook Express on a Windows computer system. The first PDF attachment received contains a good copy of the PDF. The second PDF attachment is corrupt and should be ignored.
