INSTALLATION NOTES
****************************
For best results, exit all programs and disable all utilities such as virus scanners.  When other software is running, it may interfere with the installation process.

You can hold down the Control key during startup to temporarily prevent software in the Startup folder from starting. For information on deactivating other software, see the documentation that came with the software.

If you have problems installing from a network server, copy the Premiere installer folder to the computer on which you are trying to install, and then run the installer from there.

WORKING WITH ATM AND FONTS
Adobe Premiere uses fonts only for titles you create in the Title window. Adobe Premiere does not require ATM (Adobe Type Manager) to run; however, Premiere will work with ATM to display and print fonts installed by ATM on your hard drive.  You can install ATM from the Premiere CD.

List of fonts installed: ACaslon, Bad Cabbage ICG, BakerSignet, Bodoni, Broadband ICG, Gothic 13, Goudy ExtraBold, Mini Pics Head Buddies, News Gothic, Bold, OCRA & OCRB Alternate, Orator, Poplar, Publicity Gothic ICG Solid, Tempo HeavyCondensed, and Vendome ICG Black.

GOODIES
Included on the Premiere Application CD is a folder called Goodies.  This folder contains several items that may be of interest or use to you in your work with Adobe Premiere.

*************************************
THIRD PARTY COMPONENTS
*************************************
Adobe Premiere relies on several third party components to work with digital video.  You should make sure you are familiar with the latest versions of these components.

APPLE QUICKTIME 3.02
Adobe Premiere 5.5 automatically installs QuickTime 3.02 as part of its default installation.  You can check for later versions from Apple Computer's U. S. Web site at http://www.apple.com/quicktime .

You can help ensure a smooth QuickTime installation by doing the following:
- Before installing, exit all other running applications, make sure you have closed all windows that use QuickTime, including the Control Panel window containing the QuickTime control panels.
- Make sure you have a folder named c:\temp. If you don't have one, create one.
- When the QuickTime 3.0 installation is complete, it will ask you whether you want to view the README and the sample QuickTime movie. We recommend that you deselect both of these options and continue with the Premiere installation until it has successfully finished. You can view the README and sample QuickTime movie after installation; they are available in the QuickTime folder.

You can have multiple versions of QuickTime installed on your system at the same time, so there is no need to remove earlier versions of QuickTime.  If you do need to uninstall QuickTime 3 you can run its uninstaller should you wish to remove it at some point after installing it.  However, you will need to remove or rename the file QUICKTIME.QTS yourself.  You will find this file in the System or System32 folder inside your Windows folder.

QuickTime 3 Pro is a version of QuickTime 3 that contains additional useful features that are available in Apple's MoviePlayer. Although QuickTime Pro doesn't add any functionality to Premiere, it is compatible with Premiere. QuickTime 3 Pro is available from Apple Computer and is not included with Premiere.

INTEL INDEO 5.06
Adobe Premiere 5.5 doesn’t automatically install this updated version.  Be sure to install the updated developer’s version of Indeo 5.06 from the Indeo folder on the Premiere CD or download it from Intel's U.S. Web site at http://www.intel.com/ial/indeo .  Intel's latest Indeo 5.06 renders Indeo compressed movies faster and corrects an important Microsoft DirectShow AV sync issue with Indeo not found in the 5.04 version installed by Adobe Premiere 5.5’s installation of DirectX.

MICROSOFT DIRECTX MEDIA
Adobe Premiere 5.5 automatically installs DirectX media 5.2b as part of its default installation.  The current version can be found from Microsoft's U.S. Web site at: http://www.microsoft.com/directx/default.asp .  Microsoft’s updated DirectX Media has important fixes and additional functionality for Microsoft DirectShow and Media Player.

**************************************************
COMPATIBLE CAPTURE CARD DRIVERS
**************************************************
Please be sure to check if your capture card is compatible with Adobe Premiere 5.5.  You can refer to Adobe Systems Inc.’s list of certified capture cards that have been tested with Adobe Premiere from Adobe’s U. S. Web site at: http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/premiere/main.html

Fundamental changes in how Adobe Premiere 5.5 interfaces with updated video playback architectures like Microsoft DirectShow and Apple QuickTime make it important to verify that your capture card will work well in this new environment.  If you are using older video for windows based capture card drivers please see the compatibility section below on how to turn off DirectShow playback.

If your capture card is not listed please consult with your capture card manufacturer on when they will have Premiere 5.5 compatible drivers released.

******************************
COMPATIBILITY ISSUES
******************************

TURNING OFF DIRECTSHOW PLAYBACK FOR OLDER CAPTURE CARDS
Premiere 5.x uses Microsoft's DirectShow API for playback in the source and Clip windows.  If you have display or playback problems in those windows, you may need to update your capture card drivers.  If that doesn't solve the problem, you can disable DirectShow through a setting in the Prem50.ini file.  A copy of this file has been included on the Premiere CD in the TechInfo\Settings folder for you to use as a template.

1. In the Premiere folder on your hard drive, open the file Prem50.ini if it exists. If the file does not exist, open any text editing program, such as WordPad, and create a new empty text file named Prem50.ini.
2. Add the following text to the file. Capitalization and carriage returns are important.

[override]
NoDirectShow=1

3. Save the file into the Premiere application folder and restart Premiere.

TRUEVISION TARGA BOARDS AND EXPORTING AVI MOVIES WITH CD-ROM PADDING
If you are exporting AVI movies using a Truevision Targa 2000 or 1000 series board and you require 2048K blocking (CD-ROM padding) in the movies, you need to make a slight adjustment to Premiere's Prem50.ini file, which is a text file you can create if it doesn't already exist.

This setting lets Premiere create movies that will resolve the following error messages in Targa AVI Player:
- "AVI file cannot be played because the video data chunks are not aligned on multiples of 512."
- "File not found."
- "Error: 1158: Error importing native AVI file.

A copy of this file has been included on the Premiere CD in the TechInfo\Settings folder for you to use as a template.

1. In the Premiere folder, open the file Prem50.ini if it exists. If the file does not exist, open any text editing program and create a new empty text file named Prem50.ini.
2. Add the following text to the file.  Capitalization and carriage returns are important.

[override]
PADBLOCKS=1

3. Save the file into the Premiere application folder and restart Premiere.
4. When you export an AVI movie using the Truevision driver, make sure you specify an audio interleave of 1 frame.  This setting is located in the Audio Settings pane of the Export Settings dialog, which is accessible when you begin your export.

DOCUMENTATION UPDATES
************************************

The following items are additions to the Premiere 5.x manual to document additional features not covered.

The Premiere 5 Quick Reference Card that documents the keyboard shortcuts for Premiere has been improved.  This document is essential in learning many of Premiere’s time saving keyboard shortcuts.  Please print out the “PRM5_WINQRC.PDF” file found on your Premiere 5.5 CD in the TechInfo\TechNotes folder.  Users can also use the commands palette to customize their own keyboard shortcuts as well.

Compared to Premiere 4.2, the user interface of Premiere 5 is designed to more closely resemble professional editing systems and the cross-product user interface of Adobe professional graphics programs. The best way to learn the Adobe Premiere 5.5 user interface is to go through the Tour in the Premiere User Guide. If you want to set up Premiere 5.5 windows to resemble Premiere 4.2, see the topic "Setting up windows that resemble earlier Premiere versions" in the Premiere User Guide. For detailed information about the changes between Premiere 4.2 and 5.5, see the PDF document "Changes.PDF" in the TechInfo folder on the Premiere Application CD. You must have Acrobat Reader or Exchange installed to view this document.

QuickTime 3.0 provides support for .MOV, .JPG, .GIF, and .PCT file types.  If you choose not to install QuickTime, support for those file types will not be provided, and those file types will not be able to be used in your projects.

The keyboard shortcuts for the Timeline toolbox are documented in several places including the Adobe Premiere User Guide and in online Help. However, the following information was omitted:
When you see a small triangle in the lower right corner of a tool, the triangle indicates that other related tools are stored in a menu with that tool. For instance, if you click and hold the mouse down on the Rolling Edit tool, a menu appears containing the Ripple Edit, Rate Stretch, Slip, and Slide tools. When you select a tool it becomes the visible tool from that menu.
One keyboard shortcut cycles through each tool menu. For example, if you hold the mouse for a few moments over the Rolling Edit tool when it is visible, a ToolTip appears indicating the name of the tool and its keyboard shortcut, P. Pressing P repeatedly will cycle through the Ripple Edit, Rate Stretch, Slip, and Slide tools also contained in that tool group.

If you apply a transparency key to a superimposed clip  with an alpha channel and you also apply motion to the clip, use the following procedure to make sure that the motion settings use the clip's alpha channel.  Otherwise, the key type you specified will not be used.
The following procedure assumes you've already applied a key to the superimposed clip  (see "Using Keys for Composites and Superimposing" in the Adobe Premiere User Guide).
To make sure the motion settings use the clip's alpha channel:
1. In the Timeline, select the superimposed clip.
2. Choose Clip > Video  > Motion.
3. For Alpha, select Use Clip's, and click OK.

The Monitor window Trim mode is intended for the main editing tracks Video 1A and 1B, not superimposed clips on tracks 2 and above.

You can import Premiere 5.5 projects into one another (see "Importing a project" in the Adobe Premiere User Guide). However, you cannot directly import a Premiere 4.2 project into a Premiere 5.5 project because of structural differences between the 4.2 and 5.5 code. Instead, first convert the Premiere 4.2 project to Premiere 5.5 format (see "Opening a Project" in the Adobe Premiere User Guide) and then import it into the other Premiere 5.5 project.  Make sure that both projects have the same timebase.

You can undo up to 32 actions in the Timeline, but saving the project or building previews in the Timeline resets the undo feature. You can't undo actions that occurred before the most recent save or preview render.  Viewing already built previews will not affect the undo feature.

The Source Monitor in the Monitors window has a limit of thirty-five clips.  You can easily remove clips you no longer need in the monitor by choosing the clip from the dropdown menu in the Source Monitor window, and pressing Control + Backspace.

Cut, Copy & Paste have been added as a right mouse button choice for clips in the timeline and project window.

Load Settings window has been added as an additional choice for Premiere’s startup screen in the preferences.  This is useful for choosing capture card or custom presets.  Changing Premiere’s “Window at Startup” preference requires you to quit and relaunch Premiere before it takes effect.

Report drop frames is now an option in the capture settings.

QuickTime audio compression is now supported.

Ability to skip preview files is now a choice upon open.

PREVIEW TO RAM
Preview to RAM feature is accessed under the Project menu.  Choose Settings > KeyFrame and Rendering.  This feature will display effects without having to render preview files first, by rendering the frames on the fly during playback.  If large preview sizes are used or complex effects are applied, Preview to RAM may drop frames during playback, because it cannot handle the large processing demands in real-time.  However, it may still provide a reasonable preview, without having to wait for preview files to be compiled.

It is suggested that users employ Preview to RAM as a rough estimate of previewing, at frame sizes of 320 x 240, 240 x 180, or smaller.  If a more accurate view is required, select “Render Selection” to build a preview file, then play it using normal playback from the Timeline or Program Monitor.

Preview to RAM operates under the following rules:
1) All audio under the Work Area Bar must be loaded into RAM for playback.  If there is not enough RAM to fit all the audio, Preview to RAM aborts with an error message to that effect.
2) Next, Preview to RAM checks whether it has enough RAM to process and store the preview frames in RAM.  If there is enough room, Premiere displays the message “Retrieving source frames…,” effects are processed, and playback proceeds entirely from RAM.  This is the condition under which you will get the best playback when using Preview to RAM.
3) If the video frames do not all fit in RAM, Premiere displays the message “Previewing from disk….”  Then Preview to RAM attempts to process preview frames on the fly.  If the processing demands are too high, frames may be dropped during playback.  To correct this, try changing Project Settings to use a smaller frame size or a lower frame rate.

Note that Preview to RAM plays frames individually.  It does not use the standard playback mechanism.  As a result, you may see a difference in the playback frame rate, even on sections of video that do not have any effects applied.  To minimize this, keep the frame size small.

Also note that playback using Preview to RAM is stopped using Escape (Windows and Mac OS) or Command-period (Mac OS only), instead of the Spacebar. This is because it is a rendering process instead of a standard playback function.

Preview to RAM does not use cached preview files already on the hard drive.  It generates and stores everything in RAM each time Preview is called.  To view existing preview files when Preview to RAM is enabled, use standard playback from the Timeline or Source Monitor.  To build preview files to disk when Preview to RAM is enabled, choose “Render Selection” from the Project menu.

DOCUMENTATION CORRECTIONS
*******************************************
The following corrections are for the Premiere 5.0 manual published 3/98.  Later versions may already have these fixed.  You can check your version by looking on the lower right hand corner of the back of your manual for the print date.

Page 18: The screenshot showing the project settings lists Planar RGB as a compressor.  This is a poor choice for a compressor.  Users wanting to learn more about choosing a more appropriate compressor (or CODEC) should refer to page 352.  Another good resource is http://www.codecs.com.

Page 103: Discussion of batch list settings.  Last paragraph, last sentence states that you should, “Type the number of seconds of additional video you want to capture before the In point and after the Out point of the clip, and click OK.”  It should read, “Type the number of frames of additional video you want to capture before the In point and after the Out point of the clip, and click OK.”

Page 178: The diagram under the slide edit section is incorrect.  The caption for the diagram states that this represents a slide edit. This diagram is showing a slip edit.

Page 243: Step 3, Creating scrolling or crawling type should clearly state that the bounding box drawn by the rolling title tool needs to be smaller than the amount of type that you enter.  If your bounding box is larger than the text you entered you will not achieve scrolling or crawling text.

CORRECTION TO APPENDIX A
Television signals are interlaced because they are analog, and they have to be sent through the limited bandwidth of a broadcast channel.  It would be possible to send 480 line progressive pictures 30 times per second, but the resulting flicker on your screen would be intolerable.  Another solution would be to send 240 line progressive pictures 60 times per second.  That wouldn't flicker, but the resolution would be lower, and the coarse line structure would be visible.  By offsetting every other field, interlace helps to hide the line structure, and it limits flicker to sharp, high contrast horizontal details.  By accepting some more flicker, it can increase the perceived resolution.  In effect, interlace is a form of lossy data compression whose unique advantage is that it works in the analog domain. Today, with digital compression, progressive scan is more efficient to broadcast than interlace.

Because computers are self-contained, they can use as much bandwidth as they want.  Progressive scan isn't a problem for them.  Motion picture film, though it isn't video, is similar to progressive scan, because it displays an entire frame at once.

INDEX: No listing for Field Options.  See page 162.

TROUBLESHOOTING
**************************

HOW DO I RESET PREMIERE’S DEFAULT SETTINGS?
To reset Premiere to its default settings hold the Control + Shift keys while launching Premiere or delete the Prem50.prf file found in the Premiere folder.

IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE CAPTURING
Please refer to the document "CAPTURE.WRI" in the TechInfo\Capture folder on the Premiere CD or choose File/Adobe Online to access Adobe’s TS database.

FILES GREATER THAN 2GB IN SIZE
Although Premiere 5.5 doesn't support individual files larger than 2 gigabytes in size, you can put multiple clips of that size in the timeline to get a maximum of 3 hours of playback.

HOW DO I ADD MORE TRACKS TO THE TIMELINE?
The option for adding additional tracks to the Timeline can be found in the wing menu off the right side of the Timeline window, under the Track Options menu item.

REDRAW PROBLEMS IN WINDOWS AND PALETTES
If windows and palettes are not redrawing correctly, check to make sure they do not overlap the Source or Program view in the Monitor window, or Clip windows. You can hide or show all palettes by pressing Tab; this may help you keep palettes and windows from overlapping at lower monitor resolutions.

CAN'T DRAG CLIP TO SAME TIME POSITION ON ANOTHER TRACK
You may not be able to drag a clip to the same time position on another track if the clip is linked to audio and the Video 1 track is collapsed. There are two ways to override this behavior:
- Hold down the Control key as you drag.
- Click the triangle to the left of the Video 1 track name, and then drag the clip.

********************
KNOWN ISSUES
********************
Issues in Windows Premiere 5.5:

Adobe Premiere was certified on Intel Pentium processors.  Users running on PCs with other CPUs may get the following message: “Sorry, Premiere requires Pentium or better processor.”   Once you click okay you can still run Adobe Premiere.

The following misnamed error message can come up when you exceed the 2 gigabyte capture file size limit: “Warning: Some frames were dropped or none were captured. The video source may not be connected, or your capture hardware may have an IRQ or other conflict. Please check your setup and try again.”  QuickTime and DirectShow file are limited to 2 gigabytes.  Users should use batch capture with a device controllable deck to keep file sizes under the limit, and use the timeline to playback a series of 2 gigabyte movie files.

Some display card drivers do not correctly refresh the transparency settings set for a clip when changing icon sizes in the timeline.  You may have to collapse and expand the track to correctly update the transparency settings to correctly refresh the timeline.

In order to correctly scrub clips ganged together in the Source and Program views you must use the controller on the Source side of the monitor window.

Users receiving “Puppy Application error” while working in Adobe Premiere can correct the problem by updating to Microsoft’s DirectX Media 5.2b or later. See 3rd Party Updates above on how to get the Microsoft DirectShow update.

Attempting to recapture a batch list using the same filenames may result in a “Sharing Violation” message if the files were captured earlier in the same session.  Users should quit and re-launch Premiere to correctly recapture a batch list.

Changing the duration or speed of a Windows Metafile (.WMF) will result in a file with a duration of 1 frame that can not be readjusted.  You will need to bring it back in again from the project window or save the graphic out in another format.

Users moving clips from the right hand side to the left in the timeline may notice that the track on which they move the clip on updates, but that the other tracks do not immediately update.  Zooming in or out of the timeline or moving the work area in the navigator are quick ways of redrawing the timeline.

Premiere 5.0 for Windows wrote incorrect timecode in QuickTime files. The timecode value was written in little-endian byte order instead of big-endian byte order. Premiere 5.5 corrects this mistake, however QuickTime files created with Premiere 5.0 for Windows will need to be manually corrected using the Clip->Timecode dialog, either re-entering the correct timecode or by using the Revert to Original button. Users with a number of QuickTime files with timecode should open these files with 5.0 and write down the correct timecodes before upgrading to 5.5.

When prompted to save a batch processing list by clicking the close window [x] icon, or choosing load, the file type is listed as “*.*” and not “Batch Processing List (*.hbp)” as it should be.  Make sure your batch processing list is saved with the .hbp extension, otherwise you will not be able to open or load it until you add the extension to the file.  Using the save button in batch processing correctly lists the batch processing file type and adds the .hbp extension.

DPS PVR users should never export a DPS Perception movie with the same name as their source footage. Premiere does not tell you if you are using the same name when exporting and will overwrite a file on the Perception drive that has the same name.

DPS PVR users be aware that closing a captured temp .AVC file without saving does not delete the temp .AVC, .WAV and .PVD files from the disks.

DPS PVR users that render scrub a clip and then switch back to a regular controller scrub will not see their clip play in the NTSC/PAL monitor.  Users must continue to render scrub or press the play button or keyboard shortcut to get the signal back to the TV monitor.

DPS PVR users should not move their .PVD or .WAV files.  These files are referenced in the .AVC files and moving them will break the correct file paths.

DPS PVR users that encounter clips playing out of order from the timeline will need to save, close and reopen their project.  This only happens with a unique set of editing steps that confuse the playback engine of the correct order of the edited clips.

Issues in both Mac and Windows Premiere 5.5:

Premiere 5.5 can open 5.0 saved projects.  However, a Premiere 5.5 project can not be opened by Adobe Premiere 5.0 or earlier.  Windows users will not get any error message.  Mac users will get the message “That file was created by a new version of Premiere.”  Users wanting to open a project created by Adobe Premiere 5.5 need to update to Premiere 5.5.

Get Properties of QuickTime Movies may report audio compression as: “big Endian” or “little Endian.”  This is uncompressed audio and the term refers to the specific byte order of the audio.

Marking a video track as exclude will delete your video previews and excluding an audio track will delete your audio previews.  When using the shy track feature, be careful to not mark it as exclude to avoid rebuilding your previews.

Stop motion capture support is dependent on your capture card.  Not all capture cards fully support this feature.

If your batch processing list does not open in Premiere verify that the path name for the files in the batch list are correct.  You can open the batch list in any text editor to modify the pathnames.  If you are taking a batch processing list cross platform you may want to examine a batch list created on that platform to get the correct formatting or create a new batch list.

Interpret footage is designed for use with files before they are edited and have instances in the timeline.  The correct method for successfully using the interpret footage command is to import the clip and apply the setting before putting the clip into the timeline.  If you apply interpret footage to clips already in the timeline or subclips you will get an incorrect duration or duplicate frames.

Export to tape works well from all windows (timeline & monitor windows), except the clip window where audio may drop out.

If you have imported a series of still images as a sequence, and then want to import the first frame as a single image, you will be unable to do so as long as that still image is in the same folder as the sequence.  You should copy this frame into a new folder and import it from there or use Premiere’s frame hold feature on your sequence.

If you have imported the first image as a still image and then want to import all of the images in the same folder as a sequence you will be unable to do so.  You’ll need to create a new folder and copy the still images in the sequence from the original folder to this new folder, and then import the sequence from the new folder.

When zoomed into frame view you may temporarily hear audio from a recently excluded audio track when scrubbing.  This is from the left over audio that was cached in the buffer and will quickly cease.

To ensure correct direction of a transition (i.e. whether the transition proceeds from 1A to 1B or 1B to 1A) either put the media in the next track before placing the transition or manually select the flow of the transition for every other video clip.

The auto save feature set in Premiere’s preferences only works once a project has been saved the first time.  Brand new unsaved projects will not be automatically saved until you manually choose to save the file.  This step is needed to name and specify where this file will be saved to for auto save to work.

Using the take left or take right feature on a stereo audio clip affects all audio clips in other tracks for the given duration of the clip.  If you want to affect a specific audio clip rather than an entire section of time use an audio filter like fill left or fill right.

Saving or running project trimmer on a project with offline files will change the properties of the offline video clips to 640x480 with an alpha channel.  Offline files can be linked back with their original files by double clicking on them.  To manually swap out attributes of offline files, it in the timeline, choose copy, select your replacement clip in the timeline and use the paste custom feature under the edit menu to apply the filter, fade, transparency & motion settings.

Project trimmer’s copy trimmed source feature does not honor the optimized still settings when compiling new trimmed files.  Unfortunately, this may result in the trimmed files being larger than the source files if optimized stills was used on a source file with little motion.

Preview files are not cross platform compatible.  Users intending to take a project cross platform should delete their preview files before saving their project if they want to avoid being asked for them when they reopen their project on the other platform.

The timebase in your project settings, describes the time divisions Premiere uses to position edits in the Timeline. If you change the timebase after you've already made some edits, you may see undesirable side effects that are an unavoidable mathematical result of changing the time divisions. Try to settle on your timebase before you start, basing it on the frame rate requirements of your final medium. Avoid changing the timebase after you've made edits, but if it happens accidentally, try reverting to a previous version or archive of the project (see "Correcting mistakes" in the Adobe Premiere User Guide).

Compatibility problems between QuickTime and Novell networks may give you problem when opening QuickTime .MOV, .JPG, .GIF or .PCT files.  To open these file types in Premiere, copy them from the network to your local drive.
